August Came Late This Year

In Southern California, it’s the wonderful climate we call “muggy.” The hot and damp condition that usually roles in around the 8th of August and clear out by the end of the month. It’s also the time you can see the tops of huge thunderclouds on the other side of the San Gabriel Mountains. Sometimes, we even get those thunderstorms. This year, however, August went by with heat, but none of the humidity fit for nothing by lounging with a good fan or A/C vent near by. Now, here we are at then end of the month and only now are the thunderheads and dampness appearing. I guess the weather booked a vacation and is going to plague us for September.

The novel I’m working on begins in a damp August. It may either take place only in the space of that month or finish up in a similarly humid August a year or two down the road. Perhaps the final scene will take place in one of those thunderstorms that makes rain sort of a delight.

Meanwhile, for those of you in the area, don’t let the heat get to you. We’ll all be missing it in six weeks time.
